Descripción: Hierba monoica, anual, indumento estrellado-pubescente. Hojas alternas, largamente pecioladas, limbo subromboideo, entero o sinuado. Inflorescencias racemosas o paniculiformes, terminales. Flores unisexuales, actinomorfas. Flores masculinas en la parte superior de la inflorescencia, con 5 sépalos soldados en la base, 5 pétalos amarillentos, 9-10 estambres. Flores femeninas con perianto simple de 10 piezas casi libres. Gineceo tricarpelar. Fruto cápsula con escamas peltadas. Semillas muricadas.

Empleo:

• Tintóreo: cultivada por las propiedades tintóreas de los frutos y de la planta, que se utilizan en productos alimenticios y en licores. Proporciona un pigmento azul cuyo tono varía con la acidez del medio en que se emplee, rojizo en medio ácido hasta azulado en medio básico, se ha utilizado para colorear mapas, productos farmacéuticos, dulces, quesos, tejidos, también como indicador el grado de acidez o pH en los análisis de laboratorio.
